June 14, 2008

Today there’s a bit of fun going on in Collinsville, IL (that’s about 15 minutes east of downtown St. Louis). It’s called the Southern Illinois Songwriters Festival, and it goes from 2pm until 2am. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am playing in one of the bands playing, mY mUSIc aTLas. This is our first live show since I started playing with them, so it should be fun. I’ve included a few songs below. There are a whole bunch of great bands playing one several out door stages and in several bars on Main Street (we’ll be at Hurricane’s), including Wooden Kites, Tone Rodent, Palace of Electricity, DiBiase (Chandler Evans of Ghost In Light’s new band), Council of Fidelity, Pineapple Explode (from Nashville), Tree Heart Orchestra, Joe Eisenbraun, Corey Saathoff and many more.

Old 97s Tonight

June 6, 2008

Just a quick reminder that the Old 97s are playing at The Pageant tonight. They put on one of the best show of the year last summer, so you’ll definitely want to check it out. One of the three bands opening the show is I Love Math, featuring John Dufilho of The Deathray Davies and Apples in Stereo and Philip Peeples of the Old 97s. As readers of this slice of teh interweb may know, I am a huge fan of The Deathray Davies, so I am really looking forward to seeing I Love Math play. They sound, with apologies to the other members of the band, like an acoustic, slightly countrified version of The Deathray Davies.

MP3: Old 97s - Big Brown Eyes
MP3: Old 97s - Jagged
MP3: I Love Math - This Is Something I Might Miss
MP3: I Love Math - Josephine Street

Toadies at The Pageant on July 30th

June 6, 2008

Oh wow, this is totally taking me back to high school in Dallas in the mid-90’s: Toadies are touring this summer (sans-Lisa, though) and will be hitting The Pageant on July 30th. I was all into Dallas bands in the years of 1994-1998, including Toadies, Reverend Horton Heat, Old 97s, Hagfish, Baboon, Brutal Juice, Slobberbone, Funland (featuring Will Johnson in his pre-Centro-matic days), Tripping Daisy (Tim DeLaughter in his pre-Polyphonic Spree Days and UFOFU (the Curtis brothers in their pre-Secret Machines days).

I always had a great time at Toadies’ shows and their debut full-length, Rubberneck, is still one of my favorite albums from that decade. They broke up in 2001 or so; by then I was living in St. Louis and I remember heading down to the Galaxy where they were supposed to be playing one night, only to find out that the show was cancelled. It was cancelled because they had split up.

Anyway, this one should be fun.
Toadies - “Possum Kingdom”

Toadies - “Backslider”

Toadies - “Tyler”

Toadies - “Away”

Here’s a way-old live clip of them performing “She Burns” live:
